The Healthy Kids Community Challenge launches its first theme: Run, Jump, Play. Everyday.
Hastings and Prince Edward Counties are among 45 regions across Ontario taking part in Ontario’s Healthy Kids Community Challenge (“The Challenge”). The Challenge unites communities with a common goal: Promoting children’s health through physical activity and healthy eating. Over a three-year period, provincial funding in the amount of up to $375,000 annually will be provided to Hastings and Prince Edward counties to support program implementation.
The Challenge is a community-led program that encourages partners from different sectors, including public health, education, recreation, and local businesses to work together to promote healthy weights for kids. Our Community Champion for The Challenge is Jo-Anne Albert, Mayor of the Municipality of Tweed.
Every nine months, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care will launch a new theme for The Challenge relating to the overall goal of promoting healthy weights among kids, with the current theme being, “Run, Jump, Play. Everyday.” This theme focuses on the importance of physical activity through a mix of active play, sport, active transportation, and structured activities.
As a part of the first theme, several events are currently planned for our region, including active play training sessions for Early Childhood Educators and teachers, parent physical literacy information nights, and equipment giveaways to support a healthy environment. Further details about these events and more will be released in the coming months.
